Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Takes Guests to the “edge” with the Ultimate Mountainside Bar

“Elevated Mixology” Shares Spotlight with Spectacular Sonoran Sunsets in Stylish Setting on Camelback’s Northern Slope

Scottsdale, Ariz. (June 30, 2008) – The exclusive Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain has claimed the edge on the Scottsdale social scene with the unveiling of elements, a trend-setting new outdoor bar. Affording sweeping vistas of Paradise Valley, the new bar’s “elevated mixology” concept switches up the traditional dining paradigm, putting cocktails front and center. Designed as the main course, these cocktails are supported by enticing snacks and inventive small plates crafted by Executive Chef Beau MacMillan of Sanctuary’s signature restaurant, elements.

Long, lean and ultra-stylish, edge occupies a beautiful wood deck, jutting in front of, but slightly below, elements so that both enjoy unobstructed views of the spectacular Sonoran sunsets. The al fresco setting under the stars offers sleek and inviting outdoor sofas, with seating limited to 30 to maintain the intimate atmosphere and quality of the edge experience.

New, specialty cocktails, available at both edge and neighboring jade bar, are designed to tantalize the taste buds and lead the seasonally changing menu. Incorporating only the finest ingredients, such as garden-fresh herbs and spicy accoutrements, edge cocktails include such inspired combinations as the fiery mandarin (vodka, cranberry, lemon and Serrano pepper) and the chamomile breeze (gin, honey and lemon steeped with loose chamomile tea leaves). Classic cocktails such as the traditional Tom Collins, invite guests to partake in a “gin-revival,” complemented by other mainstays, including the Sidecar, all prepared with premium brand liquors. A concise wine list includes high-end champagnes, with prices ranging from a $11 glass of Craggy Range sauvignon blanc to a $400 bottle of Krug Brut grande cuvee.

Cuisine at edge is fresh, imaginative and interactive – designed to share, ideal for ordering in multiples, and created to complement the cocktail menu. Steamed Buddha buns are filled with a choice of barbeque pork or mushrooms, a salmon and caviar parfait is served with yuzu cream and rice pancakes, and steak tartare puts taste buds on alert with an accompaniment of green onion and Chinese mustard. Designed for dipping are caramelized onion dip with crisp wonton chips, roasted beet hummus with basil, goat cheese and beet chips, and a chocolate fondue served with peppercorn pavlova, fruit and almonds. And for a simple nibble, edge’s inspired versions of bar snacks include edamame, edge popcorn, spiced walnuts, Asian beef jerky, marinated olives and parmesan gougeres.

The edge experience was developed in conjunction with Ryan Magarian, founder of Liquid Relations™, who consulted with Sanctuary to create the innovative concept. Magarian conducted a week-long “cocktail reculturalization” with edge staff, teaching bartenders to “liquid cook” with ingredients in their raw form for truest flavor, and training servers in the history of the cocktail so that they can both serve and educate their guests.

edge is open Thursday through Saturday starting at 7:00 pm during the summer months and will be open seven days a week starting in October. Closing time is at the manager’s discretion. There are no reservations, with the exception of private parties who book edge on an exclusive basis; pricing and details available upon request.
